A lot of mint

As much as I like drinking Irish tea or black tea I believe it is good to vary a bit. And one of my favourite teas is mint tea. Pete likes mint too as a condiment. It has been the first herb to grow in our herb garden, where the flowers below can also be found. I do not know their name yet, so am trying to find out about it. 

It was very humid here and it has finally rained a bit. I understand rain is not very popular. However, it comes a point in summer that it is needed and that time has come. 

Galway is quite different during this time of the year. People wear fewer clothes and very colourful ones. If you take a walk down the Promenade you get a smaller Rio. You even see surfboards outside the shops. The change in Galway is so great you feel like you are living in another country during summer. 

When I lived in Dublin I did not notice such a big change, except you do feel the sun touching your skin a bit stronger than usual too.

Addiction

In the beginning it all seemed like a joke

Born HIV Free

Since antiretroviral treatment became widely available in developed countries, AIDS has been turned from a death sentence to a manageable chronic disease.

In developing countries, access to antiretroviral treatment has improved rapidly in the past few years: 4 million people in the developing world are now on antiretroviral treatment (with 2.5 million of those funded by the Global Fund), but this represents only 42% of the people who need it (9.5 million in developing countries). Because many parts of the world still do not have adequate access, it is critical that the Global Fund and partners’ efforts are supported to continue and to expand.

What is the extent of the challenge? Why is mother to child transmission such an issue?

An estimated 33 million people around the world are living with HIV. In 2008, 2 million people died from AIDS-related causes, and 2.7 million people became newly infected with HIV. Of those new infections, over 400,000 were babies born to HIV-positive women, bringing the number of children living with HIV to over 2 million. 

By preventing these new infections, we could substantially reduce the number of people living with HIV, and the number of people who could potentially transmit HIV in the future. For the first time in the history of the global AIDS epidemic, we have the technology and the means to stop one of the ways in which HIV is transmitted. 

Though there is no cure for HIV and AIDS, it is relatively easy to prevent the transmission of the virus from a mother to her baby. You can help by simply signing your name.

Would you say Shaun Ellis is a lunatic?

I particularly, would not. But I guess I am. Not in the normal sense, though. I'm a lunatic because I love the full moon. Luna is moon in Spanish. 

And I find it hard not to associate full moons with wolves, which is another thing I find beautiful. I just love looking at them. That is probably why my late dog was an Akita, a brown-eyed happy looking wolf. But I´m not a wolf expert. Shaun Ellis is. It is clear to me he took the love for these wild canines to another level (see video).

But going back to the late spring moon, they have been associated with temporary insanity. I'm doing well since the last full moon started. At least while I´m awake because I dreamt two samurai were teaching me how to use the long sword last night. And to recover from this dream that became a nightmare I´ve been listening to Dean Martin and Chris Isaack´s covers of Blue Moon.

NB. The term "blue moon" traditionally referred to an extra moon in a season: if a season had four full moons (rather than the more common three), then the third of the four moons was known as a blue moon.

Pub particular durante Brazil x Portugal

Quando chegamos no pub para assistir ao jogo de hoje, haviam 3 pessoas presentes e apenas 2 acompanhando a partida. Uma delas era o amigo do Pete, que combinou de assisti-lo conosco e a outra foi embora logo. 

Eu achei estranho, mesmo levando em consideração que foi durante o dia e que o clima estava mais propício para ir à praia do que ao pub. Afinal, é a Copa do Mundo! Confesso que pensei o mesmo no caminho, quando ía constatando que a cidade estava movimentada, como de costume durante o verão. 

Os funcionários íam e voltavam com caixas de bebidas, passando em frente ao telão, mas não incomodaram. E pelo menos tocaram Sérgio Mendes.


Futebol com música ao fundo talvez foi o aspecto mais positivo dessa experiência, pois o jogo em si não foi emocionante, já que nenhum dos times corria o risco de ser eliminado. 


Isso sem mencionar o festival de cartões amarelos e a pézada que Julio César levou nas costas, o que rendeu mais atenção dos funcionários do pub que a partida.


Não vendiam amendoins para aliviar a tensão que provou-se desnecessária, pois o jogo acabou em 0 x 0 e o pior: quando fomos ao jardim vimos este cartaz abaixo. Por isso, achei ótimo o jogo ser irrelevante.

A música brasileira que tocaram no pub:

O cúmulo do não consumismo. E sexo e chocolate?

O cúmulo do não consumismo é quando você chega ao ponto de esquecer a senha do seu cartão de débito. 

Ao contrário das pessoas que consomem com frequência e sentem-se culpadas eu fico duplamente feliz quando consumo. 

Digo duplamente feliz, pois a primeira dose de felicidade é conseguida ao gastar e a segunda porque apesar de concordar que dinheiro não compra felicidade, acredito que o poder de compra traz felicidade. É uma felicidade efêmera todavia. Como a de quem acabou de comer chocolate ou fazer sexo. 

Curiosamente, entretanto, não costumamos a nos sentir mal quando compramos coisas desnecessárias como quando comemos chocolate demais ou fazemos sexo sem amor.

It's a Beautiful Day

¨It's a beautiful day¨, says Eddied Vedder. And I agree. It's 17C/62.6F and we have what I call Brazilian skies right now. Some could argue that could change any minute, but the truth is that we´ve been having plenty of days like this for some time. 

The weather has been good since my brother and his fianceé visited us in the beginning of May. I kept telling them it was the best time to come to Ireland considering cost and benefits. And when I say benefits I mean no rain. They got little rain. There are hundreds of ways to describe the rain in Ireland as you may know, but to be honest I use my own expressions when referring to it. What they got was spray rain like when you spray water before ironing your clothes. The Irish would probably say it's soft. 

But going back to today's beautiful day. I am not graced with a great humour when I wake up, so I really appreciate when I come accross a video like the one below. It helps me regain my form. Music is essential to me and if it's sang by amazing singers, so much the better. 

Now back to listening to hubby talking about soccer. See you soon.

Galvão Bueno levou na esportiva

Assim como todo mundo que usa o Twitter, eu tenho visto o Galvão Bueno firme e forte no trending topics há algum tempo. Tem sido um tanto divertido acompanhar o que chamo de ´traduções humorísticas` para o comando Cala a Boca Galvão. A especulação de que seria uma nova música de Lady Gaga foi fora de série.

Se você estiver longe do Brasil, como eu, poderá se dar conta que o entusiasmo de Galvão ao narrar o gol e a música que toca em seguida com o grito ´Brasil` são as coisas que você mais sentirá falta depois de estar grudado na tv ao lado dos parentes e amigos. Isto, é claro, se você ainda não descobriu um site que transmita a Rede Globo de graça. Neste caso, fica ´somente` a saudade de torcer com a galera no Brasil mesmo.

Segue abaixo o vídeo da campanha de proteção aos pássaros da espécie Silentium Galvanus que ganharam o apoio de Galvão e o próprio falando sobre o Movimento Cala a Boca. Ele levou a brincadeira na esportiva.

A vencedora do sorteio do livro The Brightest Star in the Sky de Marian Keyes foi Ana Jose Rocha. Tirei uma foto com o nome da ganhora escrito num papel que coloquei em cima do livro, mas não sei se é possível vê-lo na foto abaixo.

Se você não teve sorte desta vez não fique tristinho(a), pois pretendo sortear os outros dois livros que aparecem nas fotos: Under the Duvet de Marian Keyes e Evening Class de Maeve Binchy, que é uma autora irlandesa consagrada também. Contudo, o primeiro não é novo.

*Après Match is an Irish comedy show screened after the World Cup on RTÉ. It is performed by Barry Murphy, Risteárd Cooper and Gary Cooke. The show normally mocks famous Irish and British soccer stars and soccer experts, especially the ones who are RTÉ Sports commentators:  Bill O'Herlihy, Eamon Dunphy, Johnny Giles, Liam Brady, Frank Stapleton and Graeme Souness.

Aves marinhas sobrevoam nossa casa

Seagulls por Steven aka 1337moehre

As gaivotas sobrevoaram nossa casa e pousaram na casa de um vizinho e estão a esbravejar o seu canto típico em alto volume. Corri lá fora para capturar este momento muito incomum para mim que sou oriunda do Planato Central do Brasil.

O vizinho da casa à esquerda está lavando o carro. Isso sim era comum para mim. Não que eu lavasse o meu sempre, mas já coloquei as mãos na massa dessa forma sim. E lá em Brasília eu tinha uma companhia ilustre quando fazia isso: Bono do Luar de Verão, meu cão da raça Akita. Fez 3 anos que ele partiu, no último final de semana, e eu preferi não escrever à respeito. Talvez porque acabaria intitulando o post assim: Procura-se Adestrador André, natural do Rio de Janeiro. Ele ficou com uma fita de vídeo do Bono que foi gravada por mim durante as aulas de adestramento. É o único vídeo que tenho dele.

Mas voltando à lavação de carros. Esta foi a primeira vez que testemunhei isso na nossa rua este ano. Só é possível fazer isso por agora, no verão.

Make-up for life

If you follow me on twitter you may have seen my tweet about about a 4-paragraph-email I got from a friend who was offering me some of her make-up due to her moving. I told her and other people that she´s one of the most polite people I´ve met. 

I said so because I believe that even if you´re not a make-up expert like me you won´t need much convincing to accept a bunch of it. Having said that she didn´t try to convince me to have them. She simply explained why she decided to part with it and how much I didn´t have to feel obliged to take it. Sweet...

Funnily enough I told her on our way for seafood chowder last weekend that I find that Irish people are normally very giving. She´s not Irish, though. I mean, her great-grandmother was Irish, but she herself was born and raised in the US.
